About Us

Silliman University Alumni Association of Northern California

SUAANC was founded in 1983. The Silliman spirit that draws us together make it possible for our organization to bring together alumni and friends in Christian Fellowship. All of us members can proudly reflect on the many accomplishments and contributions we have made to our alma mater towards fulfilling its mission to provide excellence in education in the context of the Christian faith.

Among are many accomplishments are:

  • 1986 – Donated a motorized lawn mower ($3000.00).

  • 1990 – Hosted the First International Convention in San Francisco on July 20 – 22, 1990. The attendees were about 300 alumni    from New York, New Jersey, Texas, Florida, Vermont, Washington, Michigan, Hawaii, California, and the Philippines. Dr. Paul Lauby gave the keynote address on the theme, “Translating Boundaries in a New Decade.” Silliman University was represented by the Active President Eng and Mrs. Juan Escarda, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Roman Yap, and several members of the Board.

  • 1994 – Organized a “Balik-Silliman” to join the Founder’s Day celebration in Dumaguete. Donated a University Campus Bell to replace the broken bell. During the visit we saw a beautiful library building and unfortunately, an empty one. We found this an opportunity to campaign and collect books for the library.

  • 1995 – The first shipment of books and supplies were sent together with the Northern California Medical Mission. Actively participates with the Medical Society and the Philippine Nurses Association of Northern California in Medical Mission and also provided continuing education to nurses.

  • 1996 – SUAANC initiated discussions with Silliman University to propose to propose a Book Project Matching Fund to the United Board of Higher Christian Education in Asia.

  • 1998 – Sent a shipment, a container of books, supplies, medical supplies and equipment, and an organ.

  • 2001 – Second shipment, a container of books, supplies, equipment, brand new generator, and dental equipment. Our delegation participated actively during the centennial celebration. We sponsored a Library Showcase on August 28 with President Pulido and Library Director Loma Yso accepting the $20,000 and LCD Focus projector donated to the library during the opening ceremony.

Three Alumni Chapter members, namely Angelo K. Ozoa, M.D. for Medicine (1996),  Nelly A. Jocson, RN, MA for Nursing (2000), and Efren Padilla (2005) for Urban Studies were chosen for Outstanding Sillimanian Awards.
